Home made Dish washing detergent

Hey friends! A couple weeks ago a friend of mine posted on facebook that she had made her own dish washing detergent.  Coincidentally I was about to have to go to the store for some more and was considering making my own instead!  I just love perfect timing!

She directed me to the blog she got her recipe from: Lady with the Red Rocker .  Seemed easy enough, and I liked the cost break down!  In case you don't want to go blog hopping and read her post too, here's how I made it!

Ingredients:

1 cup Borax
1 cup washing soda
1/2 cup of kosher salt ( I used regular salt that I already had in my kitchen and it works perfect)
1/2 cup of citric acid ( Double this if you have hard water.  You can buy Lemishine from the dish soap isle at the grocery store if you don't know where to buy citric acid.  I didn't know so I bought some Lemishine!)

As a rinse aid simply put white vinegar in that compartment.  Works awesome!

Simply mix all the ingredients in a bowl.

And pour it into the container!

She warns that the mixture will clump!  So I put some rice in a cheese cloth and fit it in the middle of the container to help absorb moisture.

Use 1 Tablespoon per load.

I have been using this for about a week and honestly will not go back to buying regular dish washer detergent!  Using this instead of store bought soap only costs 1/2 as much, and using vinegar as a rinse aid costs only pennies per fill!
Not to mention it feels pretty great to be using something I made myself with natural ingredients. :)

So what are you waiting for? Go save some money!
