2012 Advent The Truth in the Tinsel!

It's December!! Did November fly by to anyone else? Wow.  It went by in a whirlwind!  So now here we are, in the Christmas season.  All the lights, decorations, fun activities, 80 degree weather..... haha! I love the south but man it would be nice if the cool weather actually began before the holidays instead of January when it's just miserable and not fun.  We've gotten a few days here and there but then the warm weather rolls right back in.

Anywho this year Caden is at a perfect age to do an advent countdown to Christmas! I had been pinning different ideas on pinterest, and thought I would just create my own list of fun activities and crafts to do.  And then that task started seeming overwhelming.  I mean the ideas on pinterest are ENDLESS.  Then a friend shared what she was doing for their advent.  The Truth in the Tinsel

"Spend December impressing God’s Word on your kids’ heart! You’ll get 24 days of Scripture reading, ornament crafts, talking points and extension activities. Plus fun printables and templates!"

I checked out her website and knew right away this was exactly what we would do.  You can definitely tailor it to your family's schedule, likes or dislikes.  I just love how she lays out the scripture to read along with an ornament to make to help impress the topic that day.  So here is how I set up our daily activities:

I gathered and purchased all the craft supplies we would need using her complete supply list and put each day's needed items in a little paper bag.  She gives you a printable of different clues you can utilize if you want for each day's subject.  So I put them on the outside of each bag.  She also includes printables for a paper chain you can make and either take away a link as you go or add.  So I put each day's strip into the bags and we will put it together as we go.  I thought the string would start too look really sad and empty as we went so I'm just putting the empty bags flattened back on the line.

I knew Caden would enjoy making each day's ornament but wasn't sure he would enjoy hearing me read from the bible instead of his kids bible.  She gives a great idea in using the clues of each day to have the kids listen for that word or words while you read and shout it out when they hear it.  Worked like a charm! Today's topic was Light.  We read Isaiah 9:2-7 and discussed how God sent Jesus to be the light of the world!

The suggested activity was to go inside a dark room with the light off and observe how dark it was then turn on a light and compare it to how bright Jesus' light must be to expel all the darkness in the world!  Caden thought this was awesome and shut me in the closet (since the light switch was outside the door) and quietly repeated what I said before I turned on the light for him and shouted Jesus Light!!!! It was the CUTEST thing ever.

Here he is with his neat light ornament we made today

Afterwards Caden wanted to read his bible since Mommy read from hers so I put on some music. This specific album actually which totally goes perfectly with this whole advent: It's Andrew Peterson Behold the Lamb of God.

And then we just sat quietly and read a little while :)

I love when he grabs my hand :) He was zoned out listening to the music.

Then noticed I took a picture so had to be silly :)

We had a lot of fun this morning! I'm so thankful today went so well to kick it off.  We even had some yummy oatmeal and hot chocolate with marshmallows for breakfast! I am not expecting every day to go so well since I'm sure he might not be interested some days, or just grumpy but I will do my best to blog as we go and share how it's going :) This is also really fun for me as I'm still learning and familiarizing myself with the books of the bible.

What are yall doing this Christmas season? I would love to hear your ideas and family traditions! Merry Christmas!!

    2. Oh no, we are doing TITT too. I was talking about Behold he is the Lamb of God. I am always looking for Christ centered story books to add to our reading list.
